Vox 1965 'King of the Beat' catalog page 4, detailing deLuxe series solid body guitars. This page shows the following British-built Vox guitars: Vox Stroller, Vox Clubman, Vox Shadow, Vox Ace, Vox Super Ace, Vox Consort and Vox Soundcaster. These guitar are all Fender-inspired, basically Stratocaster copies aimed at the UK's 'Shadows' fans - quite different from the Phantom and teardrop designs most associated with Vox.
The difference in build quality (and price) between the entry level Stroller and top-of-the-line Soundcaster was really quite significant.
April 1965 US prices for these guitars were as follows:
Stroller $80, Clubman $100, Shadow $130, Ace $150, Super Ace $170, Consort $230, Soundcaster $250
And although the higher end guitars were quite nice, they were not cheap in the USA, at least compared to their American equivalent. A basic model Fender Stratocaster had a list price (December 1965) of just $252, the Fender Duo-Sonic was $184, whilst the single pickup Musicmaster was just $126. These 'copies' did well in the UK, but it is not surprising that American buyers would just get the Fender, making them pretty rare guitars in the US today.
