Univox was a brand created by American musical instrument distributor Merson / Unicord (based in Westbury, New York) in the mid-1960s, with guitars supplied by Aria and built at the Matsumoku factory in the city of Matsumoto, Japan. Most of these guitars were derivative of very well established models by the likes of Gibson, Mosrite Fender, Guild and Hagstrom - but they were of good quality and gained a good reputation in their own right - most notably the Univox Hi-Flier made famous by Kurt Cobain.
America had numerous regional guitar distributors offering Matsumoku-built instruments, and, at first at least, many of these were almost identical - save a finish, tailpiece or headstock shape. Two of the earliest Univox branded models, the UC-2 and HR-2 had numerous direct equivalents but branded Aria, Commodore, Conrad, Domino, Lyle, Maxitone, Orlando, Pan, Ventura - and no doubt others too.
