This 1971 UK Selmer guitar catalogue shows numerous guitar models from numerous manufacturers: Gibson from USA, Yamaha and Suzuki from Japan, Hofner from Germany. This publication includes so many nice guitars - but the complexion of the Selmer guitar line is changing. The focus has certainly moved away from the numerous Hofner cello-bodied guitars like the Committee, President and Senator - and onto solid bodies. This is the final Selmer catalogue to include many of these models, and they no longer take pride of place on the first few pages of this catalogue.
And this is also the final Selmer catalog issued exclusively with two-colour print. The following catalogue from 1972 starts with a beautiful full-colour Gibson section, then falls back on to a similar red / black print as seen here for all other sections. Although undated, this catalog (from its contents) would appear to be from very late 1970/early 1971. It certainly contains instruments not seen in US Gibson price lists until 1971 (SG-100, SG-200 and the SB-300 and SB-400 basses), whilst also includes instruments not listed in the August 1971 Selmer (UK) price list (Such as the S.G Junior). Dimensions 21cm x 30cm, 52 pages.
The range of guitars stocked by Selmer has changed somewhat. Although Gibson and Hofner make the bulk of guitars listed alongside older Selmer acoustics (as had been the case throughout the 1960s), there is now a large range of Yamaha electrics, basses and acoustic models, and a small number of Suzuki acoustic guitars.
The Gibson guitars shown in this catalogue contain numerous long-established models, a few making their final catalogue appearances (Gibson Melody Maker, SG Junior, Melody Maker bass and Les Paul Professional); and a few making their first (SG-100, SG-200, and the SG-300 and SG-400 basses). Pages 2 to 17.
The Hofner line of guitars had always been given pride of place in 1960s Selmer guitar catalogues, however since the 1969 Selmer catalogue they had been pushed back being placed after the Gibson, Yamaha nd even Selmer models. No doubt this must have been in response to demand / sales levels, and many of the long-standing hollow body semi-acoustics were being phased out at this time. It is interesting to note the first models shown in the Hofner section are new solid body "copies" such as the SG-styled HS-174, the Telecaster-styled HS-186 bass and the Les Paul-styled HS-4579. Pages 26 to 41.
Yamaha guitars were a relatively new addition to the catalogue, first appearing in the 1969 Selmer catalogue. Yamaha acoustic guitars remained in Selmer price lists for some years, but solid bodies were dropped from the Selmer line by August 1972. Pages 20 to 25.
Three new Suzuki acoustic guitars are included in this catalogue for the first time, the Sierra Classic 60, Catalan Classic 70 and Laredo Folk 80 occupying pages 42 to 43.
