Page 8 details three SG-style Gibson solid bass guitars. Two basses are illustrated, the Gibson EB-0 and Gibson EB-3 with description of a newer short-lived model, the Gibson Melody Maker bass.
In the 1960s, Selmer were never very quick to update the images (or text!) in their publicity material. By 1970, the EB-0 and EB-3 electric basses were noticeably different to the examples shown here, having a new slotted headstock design with back-facing (banjo-style) tuning keys, chrome hardware, and an intonatable bridge (with cover). Have a look at a slotted headstock EB-3 from 1971. The EB-3 image used on this page dates right back to the model's introduction in 1961, and was used by Selmer at least from 1963. The EB-0 image is of a bass dating to 1962/63, but Selmer didn't actually start using this image until their 1967 catalogue. Likewise, the text accompanying these two basses had not changed since at least 1963.
The Melody Maker bass is a rare model, and this is its only Selmer catalogue appearance (in fact it was never included in US Gibson catalogs, though was described, but not pictured, in US distributor L.D. Heater's catalog #69 from October 1968). Not as rare as many people believe - some sources suggest only 26 instruments shipped, all in 1967 - however this is highly unlikely to be correct, though no definitive shipping figures for this model exist. In any case, the Melody maker bass was not produced in anywhere near the numbers of the EB-0 or EB-3.
It is described as follows:
Solid body. Double cut-away. One built-in pick-up. Real Gibson quality at economy price. Pelham Blue or Burgundy.
code | model | finish | price |
---|---|---|---|
5443 | EB-0 | Cherry | £242.50 |
5446 | EB-3 | Cherry | £283 |
54257 | Melody Maker bass | Pelham Blue or Burgundy | not listed |
The suggested cases for the EB-3 and EB-0 bass guitars were plush-lined case 5944, or Durabilt case 5945 (see cases, page 44). No case is suggested for the Melody Maker bass, though it would fit either of the above mentioned cases. Note these cases are also suggested for the SG Standard, Special and Junior guitars.
