Page 4 shows two relatively new instruments both debuting in 1969: the short-lived Gibson ES-340TD thinline, and the full-body ES-150DC. Note that the two images below are incorrectly labelled! The natural guitar being the ES-340TD, and the Walnut guitar being the ES-150DC (note the master volume control on the lower bout, and the somewhat deeper body). Walnut is the finish described for the ES-340TD, and it is mentioned in the text (with no mention of Natural) however the ES-150DC is listed as available in all available factory finishes: Cherry, Natural and Walnut. Perhaps this lead to the incorrect naming of these relatively new models in the catalogue.
The ES-340TD is an interesting guitar, with (for the time) somewhat innovative circuitry. The three-way switch is not a pickup selector as one would expect, rather a mode switch: with settings in-phase/out-of-phase/standby, with a blend-pot used to alter the precise ratio of each pickup in the in-phase mode.
This exciting addition to the Gibson range, not only looks different, but sounds different. Somehow Gibson have been able to improve on the sound incorporating to humbucking pick-ups. This instrument offers the best players greater tonal variation and response at a realistic price. The slim neck provides fast, low action and perfect response. Note the established Gibson quick action flick switch in co-ordination with the FIVE volume and tone controls which make this instrument a pleasure to play. The new walnut finish will be admired by everyone.
The ES-150DC is described as follows:
Another addition to the Gibson range with all the features which have made the Gibson guitar the most highly respected and sought-after guitar in the world. Call in at your usual Gibson dealer and see for yourself the well-known Gibson craftsmanship in building and electronics, featuring twin humbucking, pick-ups and adjustable Tune-O-Matic bridge.
August 1971 UK prices for these guitars were as follows:
code | model | price |
---|---|---|
5427 | ES-150DC | £341 |
5428 | ES-340TD | £362.50 |
The suggested cases for the ES-340TD were shaped-case 5906 or (Yamaha) plush-lined case 5992. Case 5996 is mentioned for the ES-150DC, though this is not shown in this catalogue or any contemporaneous price lists. Most likely this is an error and it should be case 5908, as suggested for the ES-175D (see cases, page 44).
