As fitted to a variety of electric guitars produced at the Matsumoku guitar factory, Matsumoto Japan from the mid/late 1960s to the mid 1970s. Available with gold or chrome plating. The gold-plated version typically appeared on Les Paul Custom style solid body guitars such as the Jedson Jet 4444, Shaftesbury 3400 and Univox The Mother U1982, whilst chrome-plated tuners were fitted to the Dorado 5988 and many others.
These tuners are attached to the headstock reverse with two 10mm round cross head screws. Post diameter is dead on 6mm, post length is 1 1/4"). The bolt that holds the post to the cog has a pre-1967 Japanese M3 thread (0.6mm pitch). The screws, cover, post and ferrule are all gold-plated.
Note, these tuners are very similar to the open gear tuning keys fitted to several other solid body guitars produced at the Matsumoku plant. They share the same approximate construction, elliptical buttons, footprint and some dimensions and are technically interchangeable, however there are enough differences that mixing component parts is not possible - the key of this tuner, for example, is shorter, and there are other very subtle differences to the baseplate.

Matsumoku closed gear individual tuner in situ on a 1971 Shaftesbury 3400 - reverse headstock view.
Another view of the headstock reverse, with one key removed, showing the footprint, posthole and screw holes. The post hole has a diameter of 8mm.
With the cover removed, these tuning keys are visually similar to the open-gear tuners used on various other Matsumoku guitars, and indeed they have the same footprint. However they are different enough that the covers are not interchangeable.
An entire set of tuning keys with ferrules and mounting screws. Gold plating never wears as well as chrome or nickel, however this set is in relatively good shape, though there is certainly more wear on the tuner buttons than on the covers.
The baseplate has the word JAPAN on its underside.
