The Matsumoku bolt-through tailpiece was fitted to various Les Paul copies in the early 1970s, first appearing circa 1972 through to the mid 1970s. The Matsumoku facility produced guitars for export around the world, and this tailpiece appeared on guitars branded: Jedson (4444), Shaftesbury (3400) - and many more. Available with either gold or chrome plating.
It is not 100% clear who manufactured this part. Although widely used in Matsumoku instruments, it may have been supplied by a third party manufacturer. It has no identifying features beyond its dimensions: length: 97.8mm, width: 16.0mm, height: 10.0mm (5.0mm for the arms). The raised section has a length of 60.2mm. Post hole centre to centre 80mm. Posts: total length 35.3mm, metric M8 thread. Weight: 86g.
This tailpiece has a lot of similarities to the hook on version fitted to numerous other Matsumoku guitars (see this 1971 Shaftesbury 3400 for example). The two are interchangeable, and for some models (e.g. the Shaftesbury 3400) this 'bolt-through' tailpiece replaced the 'hook on' version once it became available - check out a 1973 Shaftesbury 3400 with the bolt-through tailpiece. It is not really clear why this tailpiece would be preferable to the more traditional hook on version, especially when fitted to a Gibson copy. Perhaps this was less expensive to produce? One notable difference, however, is the mounting bolts required to install this tailpiece. And of course, it will not fall off when restringing the guitar, so it is actually a pretty useful change!
