The Guild Starfire range was hugely popular from its inception in 1960, right through into the 1980s. However there were several variants, with differing body styles, hardware and finishes; not all were as successful as each other. The Starfire XII (or Starfire-12) was first listed in a Guild price list in October 1965, at $450 - shortly after the Gibson equivalent model, the Gibson ES-335-12, which was first listed in June 1965 at $395 (US zone 1 prices). Both 12-string guitars and semi-acoustics in general were in the ascendancy in the mid-1960s, but towards the end of the decade their moments had passed. What must have seemed a sure seller in 1965 certainly looked very different just a few years later. Whilst the Gibson was deleted in 1970, the Guild Starfire remained in catalogs to 1971, and price lists as late as 1973.
The Guild Starfire came in several variations. The description below comes from the 1968 Guild catalog
Exciting electric on the folk-rock scene, Guild's SF-XII is built for the player who enjoys the challenging possibilities of the 12-string fingerboard. A rewarding instrument to play... an asset to every group that is seeking to develop its own brand of big-beat sound. Has 2 tone and 2 volume controls, toggle switch for pick-ups. Double cutaway body. Cherry-Red Starfire or Sunburst Finish.
Like all dual pickup Guild guitars stereo wiring was an optional extra for the Starfire XII.
