George Barnes was a very well regarded American swing jazz guitarist, particularly noted for his recordings of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Guild produced two George Barnes signature models, the shorter scale alto 'Guitar in F' (later given model code GBF), and the full-scale Guild Acousti-Lectric. The Guitar in F was a 22 3/4" scale guitar tuned A to A, and designed to offer a higher range in line with accompanying horns, and to easily reach a high F. It was first used on Barnes' 1962 album Guitars Galore, with four guitars built by Guild especially for this recording. Both the Guitar in F and the Acousti-Lectric debuted in 1962, before appearing in Guild price lists from 1963. Production continued throughout the decade, with the Guild GBF's final price list inclusion in 1972.
The Guild George Barnes Guitar in "F" was described as follows in the 1968 Guild catalog
An all-new concept in tuning and pick-up placement, as conceived by George Barnes for use in his 10-man guitar section when recording his exciting albums. The Guitar in "F" is strung from "A" to "A", four notes higher than a standard guitar, and tuned A-E.C-G-D-A. Mr. Barnes uses the Guitar in "F" in ensemble as he would an alto saxophone —usually two or more to the section.
To permit unhampered vibration, the instrument is built with a carved top like that of the traditional acoustic guitar, but without f-holes. Its pick-ups, "floating" above the carved top, are secured to a precision-fitted internal brace-bar which runs longitudinally through the guitar. These innovations completely eliminate undesirable harmonics or feed-back.
The instrument is fitted with 2 adjustable Guild Anti-Hum Pick-Ups with 2 tone and 2 volume controls, plus toggle switch for pick-up selection. Engineered on the humbucking principle, Guild's Anti-Hum Pick-Ups are hypersensitive to every string vibration, yet filter out all hum and other interference.
This guitar has the short 22 3/4" scale with 20 frets. Its mahogany neck, with adjustable steel neck rod, rosewood fingerboard and pearl position markers, is the fastest ever built. Body size is a compact 13 1/2" wide by 17 1/4" long by 2 7/8" deep. Back and sides are of selected Honduras mahogany. Carved spruce top is hound with 3-ply white ivoroid, as is the hack. Factory-fitted with Guild Strings.
