This Gibson mini-humbucker, only fitted to the Les Paul Deluxe is somewhat smaller than the standard PAF humbucker used in the Les Paul Standard and Custom. It has its roots in the Epiphone mini humbuckers of the early 1960s, and the Firebird series of the mid-60s. Tonally, thinner and brighter than other Gibson humbuckers, perhaps somewhere between single coil pickups and the standard PAF humbucker. Gibson part 13544 front, 13545 rear (1971,1977); 13394 front, 13395 rear (1981).
The pickup itself consists two coils, unpotted, one around a metal core, the other around 6 polepieces that screw into the baseplate. An Alnico magnet lies below the two coils. Wooden matchstick-type spacers fill the gaps between magnet and baseplate. See pics. Pickup dimensions: 1.078\" x 2.578\". Gibson literature of the time describes this as a traditional coil configuration for bright/low tonality.
Early examples are stickered PATENT NO 2,737,842 - like all Gibson humbuckers, the patent number quoted actually refers to the Gibson Les Paul combined bridge/tailpiece. By 1975, the same patent number is etched into the underside of the baseplate. Some pickups around the late 70s and into the early 1980s also have a date stamp; either a plain date or coded 394 MMYY (front) or 395 MMYY (rear).
The pickup is mounted via mounting bracket in the pickup route. This mount changes part numbers regularly: 16051 (1971), 16058 (1977) and 16066 (1981). Covers are identical (front and back) and have the same part number 70574 - except for the brief period around 1971/72 when covers had the Gibson logo etched into them; the orientation of this logo in relation to the polepieces meant two parts were listed - parts 13985 (front) and 13986 (back). The plastic mounting ring has part number 13946 (cream) or 13965 (black).
Typical DC resistance is between 6 and 7kΩ
