The Gibson S-1 insert detailed the guitar essentially identical to it's last listing in the 1978 Gibson Quality / Prestige / Innovation catalog, using the exact same text (except the choice of finish options) and seemingly the same image. The only finish option listed is Satin Walnut, as had been the case since mid-1979. The Gibson Marauder, a closely related model, was actually offered in three new finishes in this folder, and it would not be beyond the realms of possibility to find examples of the S-1 in alternate finishes, though as stated none are suggested here.
The description reproduced below lists a choice of maple or mahogany as a body wood, which may, or may not, be accurate. As of late 1979, only a mahogany body was offered in Gibson literature, and as a close out model (see the inside cover) it may be that this claim was a result of copying old specifications, rather than the reintroduction of maple bodies. Of course, there may have been surplus maple bodies lying around that did need using up! If you have a 1980 (or later) S-1 with a maple body (or a finish other than Satin Walnut), please comment.
The final US Gibson price list inclusion of the S-1 was January 1980, at $459.
