Like the Grabber bass and Ripper bass inserts in this folder, the Gibson G3 was a close out model (based on the defining characteristics of a Gibson Special, see the inside cover), last appearing in a US price list in July 1980 at $599 (Natural Satin) or $649 (Ebony / Antique Sunburst). However unlike many of the close out guitars in this folder, the G-3 actually held on a good deal longer than this - not in regular production (and not included in price lists), but with small batches shipping in late 1982 and again in mid 1985 (and perhaps at other times?).
The text and image used here are copied directly from page 40 of the 1980 Gibson catalog, and the same finish options are repeated here: Natural Satin, Ebony and Antique Sunburst. Interestingly, part of the point of the Gibson Special series was to offer 'a modification of an existing design, again as a barometer of public acceptance'. Whilst the G3 has no such modification here, the new finishes applied to other models, like the Marauder and L-6S Custom had obviously been successful. So much so, that the G-3 basses shipped from Kalamazoo in October/November 1982, are predominantly in Candy Apple Red, and although the vast majority have maple fretboards, a small number also used rosewood or ebony.
