Insert for the Gibson Flying V II. The rationale of the Gibson specials folder was to present new test concepts, and to promote expiring, or 'close out' models (see inner cover). This short-lived guitar was certainly on its way out (along with the regular Flying V); unlike the The V which better fitted the test concept rationale. There were several other new Flying V variants around the corner, with 1982's Flying V Heritage, 1983's Flying V 83 and 1985's Custom Graphics series.
The text reproduced here is taken directly from the 1980 Gibson catalog, though the image used at that time shows a maple-topped V as opposed to the walnut topped V shown here (and as depicted in the July 1980 Gibson price list). Just these two original finish options are listed here, but in reality, the Flying V II was shipping with various other finishes at this point, including Silverburst, Antique Sunburst, Ebony, White and others. Although these coloured V2s are pretty nice looking guitars, it did defeat the object of the contrasting walnut/maple body.
The Flying V II was last listed in the July 1980 Gibson price list with a hefty tag of $1299. As part of the close out, it was finally offered to dealers in January 1982's "Gibson special sale price list" (so dealers price, not retail) at just $674.50
