After a production of just 22 Gibson Explorers in 1958/59, it wasn't until 1976 that the model would be reissued. It shipped in moderate but not insignificant numbers for the rest of the decade, and was finally phased out with the introduction of other more up-to-date models such as the Explorer II (now also being phased out) and a brand new model The Explorer, with updated hardware, pickups and a Curly Maple Top.
Like 1970s reissues of the Firebird and Flying V, the Explorer was produced in significant numbers, yet not mentioned in any US catalog or price list of the decade.
