Howard Roberts had been working with Gibson and sister company Epiphone for many years, but the mid/late 1970s were a particularly fruitful time for the partnership - Roberts had appeared on the cover of the 1975 Custom Order and Electric Acoustic catalog with the then-new Howard Roberts Custom. In 1976, a more ornate model with gold hardware, the Howard Roberts Artist started shipping - though the partnership would spawn perhaps the best known model, the Howard Roberts Fusion in 1980.
