The 1975 Gibson solid body catalog featured a number of newer models, recently developed at the Kalamazoo plant, plus a couple old favourites. The cover shows Carlos Santana playing the new Bill Lawrence-designed Gibson L6-S. But this brochure did not contain the entire solid-body range, with Gibson Les Paul guitars appearing in a separate Les Paul series catalog.
Although page 2 shows a date of 1975, this publication was almost certainly prepared and printed late in 1974. An almost identical catalog was reprinted for 1976, including one additional instrument, the newly launched Gibson S-1. Only the final three pages had substantive changes, and these are also shown below.
This catalog contained the following guitars. Click on the images for full size versions, or click on the model names below for more about each instrument.
In the early seventies Gibson had received criticism for the quality of its instruments, especially with regard post-production checks.
Gibson is constantly aware of its reputation as the world's finest fretted instrument manufacturer. And we're constantly striving to keep our reputation ... and to improve it. That's why we put a guitar through over 50 checks and tests before we put the Gibson name on it. Then Gibson inspects the work approved by line inspectors. If it can't live up to these standards, it can't live up to the Gibson name.
The 1975 Gibson catalog consisted of several brochures, each concentrating on a specific area.
