1966 Gibson full line catalog. Page 12. Details of the Gibson Firebird VII, V and II guitars. The Firebird / Thunderbird bass range were first shown in the 1964 Gibson catalogue; but in the original reverse body shape. After complaints by Fender, and perhaps due to less than impressive sales, Gibson flipped the body shape to make this new Firebird; the "non-reverse" Firebird as it has become to be known. The majority of these instruments were finished in Gibson's usual sunburst, but they were also offered in a number of custom colours (see the Firebird/Thunderbird custom colour chart). The guitar pictured are in Pelham Blue, Kerry Green (or Frost Blue?) and Cardinal Red.
The Firebird VII was an expensive guitar, with it's three pickups and gold plating, US 1966 zone 1 price $379.50. At the same time the Firebird V was $289.50 whilst the Firebird III was $239.50. Another model, the Firebird I is shown on the next page.
