Gibson 1958 electric guitars and amplifiers catalog, page 35. This was the launch of the Gibson electric doubleneck; Gibsons first two models in the series were the Double-12 and Double Mandolin.
Both were hollow-bodied instruments, though with no f-holes; the guitar had a spruce top, maple back and sides, and mahogany necks. This was the case for several years until, in 1962, construction changed to a the SG-style solid mahogany body.
These models only sold in the smallest numbers; they were custom-order instruments and 1958, the first year of manufacture, was the peak year in terms of orders, with 17 Double 12s and 15 Double Mandolins shipped that year.
