Fender 1970 guitar and bass catalog. Page 15. Details of the Fender LTD Hand Carved LTD acoustic-electric. This was the models second catalog appearance, after first appearing in the previous years "Fender lovin' care catalogue". It is pictured here in sunburst finish, though also available in natural.
The Fender LTD was a very different instrument to other Fenders - a part of their attempt to expand their dominance in the solid-body market to other areas. The company ethos had always been to create functional components, that could be assembled by a largely unskilled workforce. The LTD however, was designed by Fender luthier Roger Rossmeisl, and produced by skilled luthiers, very much in the vein of a high-end Gibson jazz guitar - hand carved and very highly appointed. But it was to no avail; the instrument sold in small numbers, and was no longer listed in Fender price lists beyond 1973.
The 1970 list price for the Fender LTD was $1500/$1550 for sunburst and natural finishes respectively; left handed models were $1650/$1700. These guitars were typically between three and five times the price of a standard Fender solid body.
Preferred by leading musicians for its unsurpassed tone and craftsmanship
