Epiphone 1962 'guitars, basses, amplifiers', page 9. The Epiphone Coronet (SB533) and Epiphone Olympic (SB722). The image of the Epiphone Coronet is as used on page 9 of the 1961 Epiphone catalog. Note the original 'New York' pickup - these were included with all the other parts, tooling and unfinished guitars when CMI (Gibson) purchased Epiphone from the Stathopoulos family in 1957.
The Olympic shown here has been redesigned since the previous catalog appearance, changing from single cutaway Les Paul-style instrument, to a double cutaway - actually mirroring the changes in the Gibson Melody Maker. It does, however, keep the same basic dimensions.
The Epiphone Olympic is described as follows:
It provides big performance for students and professionals, too – at a very affordable price. A single sensitive pick up a separate tone and volume controls. The combination bridge and tailpiece make tuning easy and exact. Body is solid mahogany with attractive shell celluloid pickguard. Mahogany neck with adjustable truss rod. Rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays. The cutaway design makes all frets easy to reach and play.
This body shape would only remain on the Olympic until mid/late 1963 when it conformed to the asymmetrical body style of all the other Epiphone solid bodies.
1962 US prices for these guitars were as follows:
SB533 | Epiphone Coronet | $142 |
