Epiphone full line catalog. Page 2. A portrait of Epiphone endorsing artist George van Eps, with tag-line world famous quality since 1873. George Van Eps was a world famous jazz guitarist, most notably for his development of the seven string guitar (although he is pictured here with a six string). Pre-Gibson Epiphone had made him a seven string in 1938 - rather, they attached a new seven string neck onto the body of his 1931 Epiphone Deluxe, and it was the guitar he was most associated with for the rest of his career.
Gibson didn't capitalize on this, and by the late 1960s, a signature George van Eps seven string was offered by Gretsch instead. In recent years, however, seven string guitars have become more popular (in jazz and metal) and a few seven string Epiphone solid bodies have at last become widely available.
