Epiphone 1961 full line catalog, page 19. Epiphone B4 Professional and BV Studio upright acoustic basses. The Epiphone B4 shipped in moderately low numbers from Gibson's Kalamazoo factory between 1959 and 1964, with just 34 Epiphone B4 basses (both finishes) shipped in 1961; the BV however, performed better this year with 89 instruments shipped - actually 1961 was its peak year. (see Epiphone acoustic bass shipping totals). The Epiphone BV Studio model was described as follows:
Epiphone quality in a wonderful instrument, very modestly priced. Made of fine woods... laminated spruce top, maple back and sides, rosewood fingerboard, perfect Epiphone neck, and hardwood tailpieceā¦ all beautifully finished. Top and back are carefully arched for full tone and resonance. Full plate machine heads. Solid bridge, sloping shoulders and narrow fingerboard. Multi-ply construction assures lifetime service. This sturdy bass is ideal for students and school orchestras, and the price makes it very attractive. Three-quarter size.
