Epiphone were building upright basses from 1940, with five models, B1, B2, B3, B4 and B5 debuting in the 1941 Epiphone catalog. Precise production data for these pre-Gibson models is not available, but check out bassmonkey.net for lots of info on these early Epiphone upright bass models. Gibson owner CMI bought out Epiphone in 1957, in a large part because of their acoustic bass business, buying tooling, parts, and even 35 finished or partially finished instruments. Gibson continued building Epiphone upright acoustic basses shipping them between 1959 and 1964. They produced three models, the Epiphone B4 (in Blonde or Shaded finish), the Epiphone B5 (in Natural or Shaded finish) and the Epiphone BV (Shaded finish). In total 584 Epiphone upright acoustic basses were shipped by Gibson: 77 B5s, 212 B4s and 295 BVs. 1962 was the peak year with 178 basses shipped. The figures break down as follows:
