The Gibson J-160E was a jumbo flattop acoustic, but as signified by the 'E' in the model name, it was electrified with a single pickup right at the end of the neck, plus a volume and tone control. This model was first introduced in 1954, and was immediately very popular; it was most famously owned by Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison, who used it widely in early recordings and performances. Unlike many other Gibson flattops, the Gibson J-160E was not available with a Natural top; Sunburst only. It was described as follows in the 1966 Gibson catalog.

The model did evolve slightly over the course of production. Compare the above image (a 1954 example) with a 1969 J-160E (below). Obvious differences include control knobs, scratchplate size/shape, and most usefully an adjustable bridge.
